Published on the occasion of the exhibition Balthus: Under the Surface at Luxembourg + Co., London, from March to June 2023, this book marks the first presentation of the artist’s work in the UK since his 1968 retrospective at the Tate Gallery. The publication features a new essay by art historian Dr. Lucy Whelan, exploring Balthus’ engagement with surface as both a material and a psychological quality, and offering new perspectives on the artist’s use of vibrant layers of colour underneath his compositions, and the sexual politics implied by his art.
