Thick Paint: Jean Fautrier, Franz West, Zhu Jinshi

Thick Paint is conceived as an encounter between three artists, Jean Fautrier, Franz West, and Zhu Jinshi, each of whom has investigated, expanded upon, and, at times, flirted with or physically transposed the material condition of the painterly substance.

Fautrier, West, and Zhu hail from disparate artistic traditions, geographies, and cultural contexts. Their bodies of work are informed by distinct Post-War aesthetic ruptures - from the French Art Informel, through a breach from Vienne Actionism, and finally to the emergence of the Chinese avant-garde. Yet, viewed side by side, these artist' fundamentally sculptural approach to painting provides an unexpected common ground from which we may reassess their remarkable artistic contributions.
