This digital publication accompanies Sounds Lasting and Leaving, on view January 22 – March 14, 2020 at Luxembourg & Dayan, New York. The exhibition considers how the elusive medium of sound has carried through art since the early 1900s, when figures of Dadaism, Futurism, and Surrealism first began to experiment with audio. The exhibition fills Luxembourg & Dayan's Manhattan townhouse with audible expressions and sonic concepts by Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, John Cage, Joseph Beuys, Irma Blank, Vito Acconci, David Hammons, Marina Abramović, Gino de Dominicis, Jennie C. Jones, and Derrick Adams.

 

The below publication is Luxembourg & Dayan's first online catalogue. It is presented alongside select excerpts of sound works included in the exhibition. This e-publication features installation and archival images as well as texts by various contributors, including: Alexander S. C. Calder, President of the Calder Foundation; Gryphon Rue Rower-Upjohn, composer, curator, and great-grandson of Alexander Calder; and art historian Julie Reiter.
