Basel, Switzerland… Luxembourg & Dayan is pleased to announce its participation in Art Basel 2019 with a selection of post-war and contemporary masterworks from Europe and America.
The works on view reflect Luxembourg & Dayan’s critically acclaimed program and commitment to figures whose aesthetic investigations and technical achievements have broken new ground and shaped the course of art history: Irma Blank, Alberto Burri, Alexander Calder, Enrico Castellani, César, Domenico Gnoli, Dan Flavin, Lucio Fontana, Günther Förg, Brice Marden, Piero Manzoni, Claes Oldenburg, Ed Ruscha, Mario Schifano, and Günther Uecker.
The presentation offers viewers a chance to discover new and exciting historical resonances in previously unexplored contexts. Advancements in the material and spatial planes of sculpture come to the fore in works such as Calder’s White Moon (1955), Flavin’s Untitled (to Piet Mondrian) (1985) and César’s Expansion #12 (1970), while new ideas in the realm of abstraction can be gleaned through the juxtapositions of Burri’s combustions in Bianco Plastica M 1 (1962), Fontana’s buchi in his Concetto Spaziale from 1956, and Castellani’s shaped canvases such as his Superficie bianca (1975). Similarly, Oldenburg’s Soft Light Switches (1963-69) couples with Domenico Gnoli’s Sofa (1968) to probe and celebrate the small aspects of the everyday as they translate to artistic practice.
Collectively, the works assembled in the Luxembourg & Dayan stand suggest connections within the deeply intertwined movements of the 20th century, from Arte Povera to American Minimalism and Pop Art.
