New York, NY….Luxembourg & Dayan is pleased to announce its inaugural participation in The Art Show, the annual art fair organized by the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA).
The gallery’s stand will feature a selection of works by Irma Blank (b. 1934), Yves Klein (1928-62), Lucio Fontana (1899-1968), and Alighiero Boetti (1940-1994). Often considered components of the decorative, texture and repetition have in fact played a central tandem role in the evolution of art since the postwar era. In the hands of Blank, Klein, Fontana, and Boetti, they are tools to construct volume and depth, generate a sense of rhythm, or spark in the viewer a sense of the universal languages that tie the world together.
Luxembourg & Dayan’s presentation includes a grouping of four works executed in 1991 from Irma Blank’s Radical Writings series, a mystical meditation on the act of painting and universal nature of writing, wherein each line of paint represents a single breath taken by the artist, repeated continually along the length of the canvas. This interest in language offers a contemporaneous link to Alighiero Boetti’s Tra Orizontale e Verticale (Between Horizontal and Vertical) (1981-82). An example of his biro drawings, Boetti here turns well-known systems of classification and organization, namely commas and the Latin alphabet, into mysterious puzzles the viewer must decipher.
The display also includes Yves Klein’s ANT 31 (1960), a work that was produced shortly after the artist concluded a decade of experimentation with various color compositions. ANT 31 was executed after Klein reduced his color palette to a single pigment, a gesture that would come to manifest unprecedented complexities of pictorial wealth. Finally, Lucio Fontana’s Concetto Spaziale, Attese (1964) offers an even more physical response to the idea of texture and repetition: five slashes into a deep blue canvas seem to reveal a cosmic void beneath the canvas. These tagli, central to Fontana’s oeuvre, inquire into the intersection of conceptual and tangible space, inviting viewers to do the same.
